To Whom It May Concern:

Re:  Wakefield Brewster

I am writing to recommend Wakefield Brewster for Poet Laureate for Calgary.  I have worked with Wakefield for the past few years.  I met him when my wife and I were running a local community group for kids in Dover.  We hired him to perform spoken word for the kids in the community.  From that performance the kids in the group wanted to learn how to write and perform like him.  He was open to the idea of working with the kids and teaching them how to write and perform spoken word.  Wakefield was amazing when he would work with the kids.  He helped them develop their ideas and create their own voice.  He taught them how to perform and stand in front of a crowd and own the stage.  He connected the rap that they hear with spoken word and they all loved what he did.

I was asked a few months from that to help plan a party at the Studio Bell.  They wanted a MC that could hold people's attention and Wakefield was the only person I could think of.  He made the night run smoothly but when he performed he took over the room.  He was asked again to perform for other parties.

I just recently worked with Wakefield on a video for Calgary Arts Development and a non profit.  I asked if he had a piece about unheard community members.  He quickly answered the call and was willing to be filmed for the video.  When we showcased the video, his talent just blew the room away.  There was a buzz about Wakefield from the showcase about his talent.

I could honestly say that Wakefield Brewster would be an amazing Poet Laureate for Calgary.  He has proven time and time again to give back to the community and help the youth discover the love of spoken word.  Wakefield has worked with school and continues to be willing to work with the youth in the community.  He has been a person that I could call upon and I know he is always there to work with anyone from the community.  He is a true hidden gem within the city of Calgary.  Wakefield has inspired a lot of people with his love of performing and writing.  He has inspired a community to pick up a pen and pad to write...myself included.

Sincerely,

Tito Gomez
