Poet Laureate Nomination

To Poet Laureate Selection Committee;

It is without hesitation I write this letter in support of Wakefield Brewster’s nomination for Calgary’s next Poet Laureate.

 I have had the pleasure of working with Wakefield since 2011 when I was introduced to him and his poetry by way of his People’s Poetry Festival performance at the Mustard Seed.

He drew me in with his poetry, his words, his ability to share his vocal dexterity, memory, and his warm engagement with the audience which consisted of poets and those experiencing homelessness.

Since that day, Wakefield has been part of my life professionally, and personally

I’ve witnessed him mentor young writers as part of Loft 112’s The Tent Peg Reader Series, as well as our collaborative project Long Table Creative where he worked with adults with Developmental Disabilities, teaching Spoken Word poetry and how to deliver a Poem.

As a mentor, Wakefield is genuine, comfortable, knowledgeable, and unforgettable.

 He is one Poet that after contributing to a project, his name and presence is remembered and discussed at subsequent festivals, workshops, and readings.

 Wakefield Brewster leaves an impression.

I’ve also been part of the Indie YYC as a previous co-host with Wakefield.

The energy he brings to the job and encouragement to new and seasoned poets alike is unmatched.

There are a lot of personalities in the poetry community, and Wakefield is one.

But he is known for bringing the community together, for encouraging new voices and for working very, very hard for every opportunity he lands.

Wakefield Brewster is an exceptional poet with star quality.

 He has built community through open mics and mentorship that I’ve borne witness to for over 10 years.

He would serve the role of Poet Laureate and serve this city honourably and energetically, and I strongly support his nomination.

Sincerely yours,

Lisa Murphy Lamb
