February in August
It’s August – and it’s February.
That statement is not the result of an error with my internal chronometer.
Nor, is it the happenstance of a rift in the space-time continuum.
(This is not Star Trek, Rest In Planetary Peace, Sister Nichelle Nichols.)
Do allow me to explain.
An All-Black Company of Performing Artists will usually find an opportunity with a non-BIPOC production company, only at one particular time of the year, and that is in February aka: Black History Month.
Customarily, Intentionally, performatively, such is and has been the case for years – and years. This, I know to be true, as I have been both the Victim and Victor of this animal bred out of conflicting interests.
As your Poet Laureate, I am aiming to alter that narrative – at least, at first, Poetically.
“February in August” is a collaborative initiative forged with a game-changing team of creatives in a space becoming more like home for me – The Grand Theatre.
Every person, place, and thing – has a history, is here in the present – and is looking towards a hopefully big and bright future.
Such is the case with The Grand, presenting this wonderful All-Black Poetry & Spoken Word Extravaganza, celebrating Black Excellence and Artistic Contributions in its Stunning Studio Space.
This Marvellous Mâtinée will feature the Poetic Profoundness of:
Sholley Powell
aloT of Poetry
Chris L. Butler
Tanecia Cromwell
These four were curated from their resounding, respective featured performances this summer during PitBull Poetry In The Park, in Century Gardens.
Now, experience the Poetic Power and Microphone Mastery of all four in one show.
