Dear Poet Laureate Committee:

I first met Wakefield Brewster while I was volunteering at Festival Hall for an event, he was the Master of Ceremonies and a performer.  I was amazed at how he captivated the audience and got his message across in such an interesting and unique way. We started talking after the show and I expressed an interest to learn to do Spoken Word and he agreed to teach me. That was quite a few years ago but I still remember and use the lessons he taught me. It was more than how to be a poet, it was about speaking and moving to convey your message as well as how to think about poetry and what it means.

Wakefield is an amazing Poet but also an amazing person. He is a founder the Poésie à la Patisserie and Pitbull Poetry Reading Series to help give poets of all levels a place to show their talents. Wakefield is also a coach and mentor to many poets of all ages working with children and adults alike.

Wakefield has a wide and varied biography, having appeared in 4 published anthologies and 2 audio recordings to date. He is also a 3-time Calgary Poetry Slam Champion and Team Captain, a Poet Laureate finalist, the resident Poet and Spoken Word Artist of The Grand Theatre, and an active advocate for The Humanities, Addictions & Recovery, Healing Arts, and Mental Wellness.

I believe Wakefield would make an amazing Poet Laureate for Calgary. His presence and energy are infectious and he would be a fantastic representative.

  Thank you
